London Design Festival Trends: 21 Botanical Designs

London Design Festival was green this year! London Design Fair placed a large number of plants around the show to help guide visitors and make them happy.

London Design Festival is now a wrap. Without a doubt, biophilic design and botanical influences were high on the agenda among event organisers, exhibitors and speakers. Looking around London Design Fair, Decorex, Design Junction, Top Drawer and 100% Design, plants and natural materials were everywhere; both symbolic and real. It seems the UK is starting to understand the importance of biophilic design principles (if not…

Log cabin – The heart and soul of Norwegian life

Every part of this Norwegian log cabin is put to good use to make inhabitants comfortable.

The log cabin seems to form the heart and soul of Norwegian life. Having travelled around this remarkable country over the summer, I’ve seen how the log cabin, or “hytte”, is an assumed part of a person’s being, of their life cycle. You work in the city or in smaller remote towns, then you spend your leisure time in your small hytte. Enjoying nature, whether…

The Future of Design: Climate and Wellbeing as an Opportunity

Living in an apartment doesn't mean you can't have trees! Even if your access to nature is restricted by city living, the residents in these apartments gain a natural perspective.

The future of design presents us with an opportunity for Positive Mental Attitudes, with regards to climate change and, importantly, also the wellbeing of our species. We must believe it’s possible to be more in tune, and surround ourselves with others who share this belief. Great plans then start forming. Architects and interior designers have a responsibility to lure people not into more luxury, but…

Norwegian Cabin: Manshausen Island Resort

Norwegian cabin that surrounds you wilderness.

I was struck by this magnificent Norwegian cabin resort during my research into the country’s wilderness. The Manshausen Island Resort lies in the Steigen archipelago, above the Arctic Circle in Norway. Developed by polar explorer Børge Ousland, his vision was a sustainable adventure exploration resort that is fully immersed in the coast’s rugged environment. It is beautifully positioned between the Barents Sea and the famous Lofoten mountain…

House & Garden Fair 2017 Roundup: Gardens, Plants, Accessories and more!

Tillandsia Cacticola airplant by Monti by Monti

The House & Garden fair, known as the House & Garden Festival, has just taken place at London Olympia. There were three sections to the festival; HOUSE, Spirit of Summer and the garden dedicated GROW sector. Many of the unusual succulents and air plants on show were particularly striking. I also found some stunning plant vessels, such as those from Monti by Monti (so much so that…

Outdoor Sauna: Key Role in a Swedish Community

The outdoor sauna was specially commissioned for Kiruna as a place to bring the community together. A town displaced by the iron ore mining industry, the sauna is intended as a place to meet, socialise and discuss. The Solar Egg, perched in the spectacular northern landscape.

The outdoor sauna is central to the social lives of many Scandinavians. No less so than for the residents of Kiruna, a town in northern Sweden for whom the Solar Egg was built. Decades of iron ore mining, which continues to this day, has left Kiruna and its residents being relocated several kilometres away. Thus, to maintain the strong spirit of Kiruna’s community, developer Riksbyggen commissioned…
